Khontoke is the traditional dining of the North of Thailand. "Khan" actually means bowl and "Toke" refers to a small, low, round floor table uaually made of rattan or lucquer were. Dinners sit on the floor around the bable and share numerous dishes. This is where the dining style got its name.
The menu usually consists of "Gaeng Hang Lay" (pork curry with garlic, ginger and other spices), "Nam Prik Ong" (minced pork cooked with tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and chilies), "Cab Moo" (fried pork skin), special deep fried chicken among the many choices. These dishes are eaten with "Kao Nieow" (sticky rice), a special rice variety.
Thai classical dances and fabulous shows ("Khon", "Tee" dance, Klong Sabaad Chai"or Drum Show, "Sueng Kapho", the northeastern traditional band, etc.) are presented by talented performers and musicians from the Chiangmai college of Dramatic Arts. Not only do visitors get the opportunity to watch the dances but also get a chance to dance themselves, each being taught of the "Raam Wong" circle dance by the friendly performers.
